Lecture: Urban Reconstruction in Ukraine and Eastern Europe: Memory, Resilience and Regeneration

War damage, demographic change, infrastructure vulnerability, and climate risks are reshaping cities across Ukraine and Eastern Europe. Reconstruction extends beyond rebuilding physical structures; it also involves rethinking urban systems, governance, economies, and cultural identity under conditions of uncertainty. This lecture series approaches reconstruction as a transformation in urban planning—from technical rebuilding toward integrated spatial, ecological, and institutional change. It explores the relationships between heritage, infrastructure renewal, environmental adaptation, and long-term urban regeneration. European post-war and post-socialist experiences serve as comparative perspectives for understanding current Ukrainian challenges such as housing loss, displacement, environmental risks, and shifting local identities. The course further examines the connections between urban design, infrastructure, ecology, economic recovery, and governance, while addressing ethical and political questions related to memory, participation, and power. The program is structured around three thematic areas: (1) memory and urban identity, (2) resilience and institutions, and (3) regenerative urban strategies. Students develop analytical tools to evaluate reconstruction models and design context-sensitive approaches for future urban development.
