Seminar: Metropol.x_Karlsruhe
Located on the Rhine River in southwest Germany, Karlsruhe is a city of around 310,000 inhabitants and is known for its distinctive fan-shaped urban layout radiating from the palace at its center. Founded in 1715 as a planned city of the Enlightenment, Karlsruhe has developed into an important center for law, technology, research, and innovation. Today, the city is home to Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court and is recognized as a hub for science and digital industries, supported by institutions such as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The task of the seminar is to explore this urban DNA through observing, mapping, critically evaluating, and finally visualizing various layers, e.g., historical and demographic development, housing patterns, infrastructure, education and culture, architectural styles, public space, mobility, and contemporary urban life. As a result, an atlas of Karlsruhe’s contemporary urban landscape will be published.
